Day Trip: Neureuth am Tegernsee
Just a few notes to share what we thought was a great day out with our kids:
Take the BOB train to Tegernsee from Hauptbahnhof (we bought a "Bayern Ticket" for the whole family). Train ride is less than one hour. One particularity of these trains is that each car goes to a different town, so make sure that your train carriage displays Tegernsee as its destination. Cars don't split up until a few stops outside of Munich, so even if you initially enter the wrong car, you have time to switch later.
Make sure you get off in "Tegernsee" (which is the last stop) and not in "Gmund am Tegernsee".
Once outside of the train station, go to the right and look for the yellow sign indicators which point the different trails. Look for the one saying "Neureuth". It should say it is around 1 1/2 hours away.
We found the "Neureuth" signs really easy to follow and were never confused as to which way to go. There seem to be several ways of going up, but we always took the one that had the lowest estimated time !
The hike up to "Neureuth" is rather steep and in reality took us around 2 1/4 hours, through beautiful forest and with gorgeous view of the Tegernsee below. With enough motivation and patience, our two children (3 and 5) went all the way and had a great time overall. It helped that there was still some snow left with which they could play here and there.
The hike ends at the hut at "Neureuth", with a great terrace and beautiful views of the lake and surrounding peaks. Food and drinks are served and the kids enjoyed a well deserved ApfelStrüdel.
