-Marienplatz
-Ramersdorf
-Fraueninsel on Chiemsee
Munich Indoors Equestrian En Garde
Winter Tollwood
New Year's Eve

Please let us know if you have gone to any of these events!

Snow, skiing, sledding, rentals in Munich

Snow! All about skiing, snowboarding, equipment rental, locations, sledging, lessons etc

Yes Munich is not far from the Alps and yes there are quite a few good hills around town. But where are the best? what do our parents recommend?

***

Does anyone know if we could hire children's ski boots and skis for a longer period than just a day?

***

Hi PIM, what would be the best skiing for this Sunday where you can rent all equipment on site? tIA

***

A question about ski equipment: where would be a good place to go to buy ski boots and helmets for adults?

***

I would like to take the kids skiing in Switzerland for a few days in February. What are the best hotels, drivable from Munich which are great for families and offer many activities

***

'm thinking of taking my kids on a train trip to Garmisch. Has anyone given this ski-resort a non-skiing try?

***

Could someone recommend a Great Spot outside munich ( within 30 min - max 1h drive )to sledge and / Or Ski for the Kids?

***

Any ideas where to go by train to enjoy some sledging or "baby"-skiing?

***

Neubiberg/Waldperlach peeps. Any good sledging hills around

Kik sell Santa suits for cheap. You can probably find them on amazon.de too among other places, do you have any recommendations?

A few years ago we had a very good discussion on explaining Santa, Kristkind, etc to your child. See this post.

Christmas Traditions in Bavaria and Munich

Bavarian Christmas Traditions

For those staying in Munich for Christmas, I've found some Bavarian Christmas traditions you may wish to adopt.

The 6th December is Nikolausday.

On that evening, Saint Nikolaus visits families and checks his golden book for who has been naughty and who has been nice. In the case of really bad behaviour, Saint Nikolaus is accompanied by the Krampus. The Krampus is a wild man dressed in dark fur. The Krampus doesn't hurt anyone, but is scary. Saint Nikolaus gives well-behaved children small gifts in their shoes (not socks) ready to be found & enjoyed the next morning. Note that Nikolaus is NOT the Weihnachtsmann, which means Santa Claus!

The Holy Night is Christmas Eve (24th December)

This is when the mother of the family brings in a tree into the home and decorates it in the traditional colours of green, red and gold (in secret) with the help of the Christkind (a kind of Christmas angel or spirit). When the tree is complete, the mother rings a bell to signify the tree is ready. The children and the father sees the decorated tree for the first time, and this is when all the presents are distributed. A family meal is then eaten, which is normally basic like sausages with potato salad. Later this evening (about 10pm), families go to church and sing Silent Night (in German, of course).

I hope I have translated properly and I haven't missed anything out!

What are your family traditions, whatever country you are from?

We have one of Santa's elves visit on Christmas Eve night, whilst little Tristan is in the bath, to give out a small present which will be brand-new pjamas (so he looks sparkly clean with new PJ's on Christmas Day morning when we'll do presents and photos).

We're enjoying the club Münchener Wasserfreunde e.V. (6 yr old)

We also loved the lessons with Fr. Klektau in the Hessstr. (4 and over)
both of these programs prefer the parents to leave (Klektau requires it). Again, 4 and over. That little year makes a big difference. I think most programs start at 4, unless you arrange private instruction.

I can also recommend the book 'Water Babies' to help you encourage your children to swim without a 'lesson' feeling.

Happy splashing!

Here are a bunch of links I found today while helping a friend, these aren't for lessons, just fun for kids.

Child friendly food/snacks and Brotzeit in Munich

Are you at a loss at what to feed your children? Stuck in a brotzeit rut?

Check out these suggestions from parents:

I finely sliced a leak (they claim to hate leak), cooked it in butter, added a bit of orange mustard (it came free with some smoked salmon), added a little flour, added milk, left over sour cream and cream fraiche, smoked samon, salt and pepper. Mixed in tagliatelle with it.

wurst, sliced carrot, brezen, salty brezelis.

sliced carrots, cutted cucumber, Kohlrabi (don´t know the english word), apples, fennel, Paprika (peppers?).

Shepherds Pie, Chicken Stew, Sausage Casserole and Fish Pie. Lasagna is always good too...otatoes Goulash, salmon pie with bechamel... Risoto, chicken frie rice, vegetarian or meat couscous, beef stroganof with eggs noodle, meat loaf, fritatas, quiche, macaroni bolognese, mac & cheese (with berg kase)!!

Vegetables in Béchamel Sauce

Quesadillas, lasagna, tomato soup with grilled cheese, veggies with feta cheese and rice, stuffed peppers...are my children's favorites.

Our boys love any soup as long as it is wizzed up with cream so it's smooth and doesn't have bits in; Great with bread to dunk in it. Another favourite is cauliflower and broccoli cheese

Butter chicken, dahl & rice my daughter gobbled up. Fresh fish & chips. Boiled eggs that she got to help peel went over really well. Also risotto and coleslaw, separately. She's crazy about homemade granola (periodically for afternoon snack, and once in a while for dinner). While veggie-less, there can be plenty of nuts/fruit/seeds in it.

Our dinners mainly consist of 3 to 5 different components: 1) potato or rice or noodles or couscous or quinoa or bulgur PLUS2) two sorts of vegetables (eg peas&carrots or corn& olives or broccoli&tomato or zucchini&bell pepper etc etc).PLUS3) Salt, pepper, some spices and herbs, or garlic, onion, etc here i try to make it "international" - Let's say cilantro for Mexican style or cinnamon and cumin for Moroccan, extra garlic and olive oil to make it Mediterranean, etc smile emoticon PLUS4) optional: any meat or cheese (feta, mozzarella etc)I mostly mix it all together and either serve it warm or as a salad (just add vinegar and oil)I try to create as much variations as possible and I get veggies from our local veggie stand. Also things that i have never tried or prepared before. That makes the cooking process quite interesting and I often have to look up recipes online. You can also add: 5) optional: sauces, dips, pesto of all kind - i make those myself from various veggies or yogurt-quark mixes, tomato puree (instead of ketchup) etc

My kids love soups and stews of all kind. We cook huge amounts and freeze them in little portions. this way we always have something to warm up whenever i don't have time to cook. Today we had chickpeas tomato and kale stew. Yesterday it was Bulgarian soup with potato, carrot, red bell pepper and chicken smile emoticon And often it is just a simple Brotzeit: a slice of bread with butter and cheese and a cut up tomato and some cucumber

Oh and different sorts of fries: we cut up zucchini, potatoes, carrots, egg plant, etc in slices, add olive oil, Salt, oregano etc and put it in the oven. Serve with sour cream

1. sweet potatoes and chicken fingers,
2. roast chicken with potatoes and carrots they go crazy for, and once everything is chopped and in the oven the work is done.
3. chicken soup,
4. quesadillas, whatever they like inside,
5. pea soup with Speck or wienies... I am not really a recipe person but if you want more details on any of these let me know, I'll try:)

My son eats Roti's ..just plain ones with ghee or stuffed with grated radish/carrot and cheese or any filling of your choice. In case you eat Indian food, there is a lot more I can suggest

Borsch, Chicken soup, Turkey leg soup with barley, potato, carrot and pickled cucumbers, then the chicken liver beef-stroganof style with buckwheat. Or mashed potato with anything like meatballs, cutlets, fried fish. Or zucchini or pumpkin+potatoes pancakes

I vary the Brotzeit with my son. Sometimes it's a healthy muffin (either chia banana or apple hemp) or "oat and applesauce cookies", sometimes it's berries with plain yogurt and a müsli as topping in a separate container. Sometimes it's half a sandwich (a whole one would be too much). I usually add some fruit or vegetables (carrot sticks, cucumber slices) or dried fruit or nuts. If we have lunch/dinner leftovers that can be eaten cold, he will also sometimes take a small container of those (couscous salad, milk rice). A sweet treat for the Brotzeit box are also dried fruit/nut/oat bars or balls.nuts and raisins, homemade whole wheat waffles, PBJ, Peanut butter and banana sandwiches, grapes, cheese and salami cubes

My neurologist is a good doctor and speaks English. She has herself called me a couple times, run all the tests I should be doing (she always mentioned before my neurologist uncle recommended me), gave me a couple printed copies of scientific studies and was also updated to the state of art about drugs. She also never rushed at appointments and always answered my questions. But... Her "expertise" is epileptic pregnant women... <a>went back to Dr. Fuchs (ophthalmologist) yesterday. I asked about the amazing 3-d retinal imaging equipment he used to check the changes in my eyes over time, He was able to detect exactly what had happened, were the problem was and will be able to see if there has been deterioration when he checks in two weeks. This equipment costs more the Eu 100,000. Very few drs. can afford it. Without it I would not be sure what had happened and wouldn't feel confident about the diagnosis. I can't recommend him highly enough. They saw me as an emergency and bumped patients with appointments.

Just wanted to write a recommendation for an AMAZING childrens magician/comedy act that kept 12 4 and 5 year olds howling with laughter for 45 minutes at the weekend. His name is Rene and he is bilingual English/German so can do it in both languages fluently. His number is 0160 6535520, website

This guy is amazing. The kids were laughing from the off, he gets them up and involved in his act. The parents loved him too and were laughing as well. Lots of good slap stick comedy mixed with little tricks. Just fabulous. He does an act for older kids, adults, work parties etc. He would definitely be a talking point!

We just our 8 year-old daughter's birthday party at the Munich Egyptian Museum. Our guide was a real life Egyptologist, Vivian, who spoke perfect English and was amazing with kids. I can not recommend this venue enough! First the kids put on Egyptian costumes, then had a guided tour of the museum, then had a lesson on hieroglyphics. (There are many themes to choose from.) The museum charges 100 euros for up to 15 kids, for two and a half hours. Ask for Vivian if you book a party

My son celebrated his 2nd and 3rd birthdays at Gymboree and both were great  we've also been to other people's parties there and enjoyed them all. The best thing in my opinion of holding it at gymboree is the whole space is for you and you don't have to worry about keeping an eye on your personal possessions or worry about big kids knocking yours over like at lollihop etc, especially when the kids are young! it also feels more like a party than having everyone spread over different places and only coming together to eat! You don't have any clean up to do there and you can do as much or little work as you like regarding food - I did a buffer at home and took it with me and a cake of course, but for the main meal, there is a vapiano just around the corner where you can get take away pizza and pasta if you prefer. It maybe more pricey, but for me it was worth it
